Welcome to the Girls Development section of Stony Stratford CC.
The club is dedicated to the development of our young lady players and believes that youth cricket plays an integral part in ensuring the clubs future. The girls section has evolved gradually over several years, with the occasional sibling of one of the boys joining in with training, which lead to Martha Manktelow and Chloe Ayre developing to the extent of competing with the boys for a deserved place in the hardball squads. As successful role models, more and more younger girls were expressing an interest in training.
In 2012 a dedicated ‘girls only’ summer softball training session was established. Natalie Church, an active sports coach, volunteered to run the sessions with the support of the existing cricket coaches. A number of girls ranging from 6 to 14 years enjoyed the summer season of fitness, fun and cricket skills. The winter season saw a hardcore group of 9 girls continue with their fitness and cricket skills training, with some of the girls also joining in the winter nets sessions alongside the boys.
In 2013 the club entered its first all-girl squad into the under 10 Bucks hardball (boys) league, rather optimistically as the first training session of the summer was for many their first experience with a proper cricket ball. But the girls relished the opportunity to play in matches and grasped the opportunity to shift to hardball with both hands. The girls fulfilled every match commitment in the 2013 season with the club measuring the success of each game not on the winning but on the learning and goals achieved, with much 'whooping' from the supporters on the first bowled wicket, catch and run-out in the season.
Martha Manktelow and Emily Hunt both continue to not only be role models for the girls at the club but are both actively involved in running the coaching sessions.
The club is grateful to The Lord Taverners for their donation of a kit bag and kit for the girls, received early in the 2013 season. In addition, the club is delighted to thank the Jo Baldwin Community Trust who supplied a new kit bag to enable us to run two girls hardball teams at the start of the 2014 season.
In 2014 we entered all-girls teams into two age group Bucks league competitions at under 10 and 11 level. The under 11 team achieved their first outright win and a further couple of conceded games by other teams saw them finish 7th out of 9 teams on 53 points. The under 10 team only enjoyed a couple of league fixtures due to a lack of opposition, but played well and gives us something to build on for next season.
For the 2015 season, we entered girls teams into the Bucks under 10 and under 12 age group competitions AND excitingly for the first year Northants organised a GIRLS LEAGUE. This saw the club enter under 11 and 14 age group teams against other girls teams in the Northants area.
A year later in 2016, more expansion was achieved with the creation of the under 15 girls team to support the new ladies squad.
Our girls softball group is also going from strength to strength with lots of our younger girls continuing their cricket skills development.
